INSTRUCTIONS to make the Cross my Heart Cowl pattern!
SKILL Level – Easy/Intermediate

About Pattern: This one-skein project is a quick and fun to make with just a few repeated instructions. Made working in rows; worked sideways, the size and width of the cowl can be customized (may require more/less than one skein if size varies).
COMPLETED SIZE: Approximately 21 inches in circumference and 6 inches in width; including the frill. The length of the cowl can be customized based on requirement. The fabric of the project is stretchy, so check before joining to form the cowl.

MATERIALS:
Yarn of choice – I have used about 96 yards/ 80g of Ganga Beanie Yarn (Bulky Weight)
Hook Size: choose the yarn appropriate hook to get the required stitches. I have used 6 mm hook, with medium tension while working.
Stitch Markers (Optional), scissors and a needle to finish up.
For a different weight yarn/ hook size, please check highlighted ‘TIP for customization’ while working the instructions.
Gauge: 14 dc stiches 17 rows measure approximately 44 inches (10*10 cm)
Stitches used: US crochet terms
ch - chain
yo - yarn over
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
ss – slip stitch
IMPORTANT
PLEASE NOTE:
• ch1 does not count unless specified otherwise.
Ch3 counts as a dc stitch.
LET’S START!!!
Defining the Crossed DC stitch.
Here the stitch is worked over 3 stitches/chains as the pattern calls for it.
STEP 1 - yo, skip 2 stitches and dc in the next stitch (forms the first leg of the crossed stitch)
This gives us a right leaning stitch.
STEP 2 - ch1 (this gives the space between the 2 stitches for the cross).
STEP 3 - yo, go back to the first skipped stitch, from the front of the work and insert hook and pull up a long loop (3 loops), complete the dc stitch.
This gives us a left leaning stitch.
This forms the textured crossed stitch to add to the drama of the pattern.
Let’s begin!
Following the exact number of stitches as in the instructions will work up a of width a bit more than 5.5” inches.
We will work the band width wise in rows and the edges are joined.
The frilly finishing/edging for the cowl is worked after the basic Cowl is joined.
NOTE:
· When we work the first 2 repeats of the instructions, measure the width. This will help you determine the number of chains you will need to make.
· TIP to customize – will be highlighted. So, if you change the number of stitches to match your customization, then follow highlighted instructions!
Ch 21.
This gives you a stitch count of 4 dc + 5 Cross DC Stitches.
TIP for customization: to add additional width, increase the stitch count by 3 chains (for every additional CROSS DC stitch)
Row 1 (RS): dc in the 4th chain from the hook (together counts as 2 dc stitches).
Make a Cross DC Stitch (across 3 chains) FIVE times,
Make a dc in each of the last 2 chains. TURN.
(2 dc + 5 Cross DC Stitch + 2 dc)

Row 2 (WS): ch 1 (doesn’t count as stitch)
Make 1 sc in each stitch, and 1 sc in each ch1 space across. TURN. (19 sc)

Row 3 (RS): ch3 (counts as dc) and dc in the next stitch.
Make a Cross DC Stitch (across 3 chains) FIVE times, make a dc in each of the last 2 chains. TURN.
(2 dc + 5 Cross DC Stitch + 2 dc)
REPEAT Row2 and Row 3 - 19 more times!
Repeat Row 2 one more time, hence ending on Row 2 (sc row).
You can continue and join the cowl using slip stitch OR if it’s easier Fasten Off and weave in the ends.
To give me an approximately 21 inches rectangular band.
Tip for customization:
· Repeat 2 rows as above to increase the length as needed.
· Stretch the band over a measuring tape, to check. This helps you make the band that’s a proper fit for you.
SCROLL DOWN for finishing instructions!
To Join:
End the band with Row 2.
Lay out the rectangle flat and twist once and join the shorter ends as shown in the schematic below.

Match the edges, Corner A to Corner C;
Corner D to Corner B – essentially making a twist in the rectangle. Join them using slip stitch.
DO NOT CUT and continue on the side of the cowl.
Finishing:
We will add a frilly border on the side of the closed twisted cowl to give it a pretty edge/finish. Because it’s a twisted band, we will be covering both sides of the COWL and come back to the starting point in a continuous finishing round!

Ch1 (doesn’t count as stitch), sc in the join and make sc all around. Join to first sc with a slip stitch.
· (1 sc, ch 1) on the side of the Row 2 repeats
· (3sc, ch1) on the side of the Row 3 repeats.
Join to the first sc made in the finishing round.
Fasten off and weave in all the ends.
